The agency quoted Gisborne area controller Detective Senior Sergeant Waata Shepherd as saying the police had heard the suggestions several weeks ago and two staff members were researching and planning for the possibility cults may head to the region to commit suicide.
Shepherd said Interpol was also helping with inquiries, according to the report.
Located on the eastern most point of New Zealand's North Island, Gisborne is considered to be the first city in the world to greet the dawn in 2000.
