Beer and liquor, soda, cigarette and amusement licenses were in limbo Tuesday for five businesses due to unpaid property taxes and other bills owed to the city.
The licenses, which must be renewed annually, expired at midnight on June 30 and new licenses cannot be issued to businesses where the property owner has any debts outstanding to the city.
Several businesses that lease properties where taxes were still owed have paid the tax on behalf of the owner in order to get their licenses, according to City Hall.
Businesses still without licenses for the sale of some items Tuesday afternoon included the Wisconsin House, AmericInn, Best Western and Village Haus and the three People’s Express gas stations.
The Wisconsin House owes about $10,236 in delinquent property and motel room taxes, according to the city.
The other businesses are owned by Midwest Oil and Midwest Hotels and Motels of Shawano, subsidiaries of the Samanta Roy Institute of Science and Technology.
According to the city, there is $268,015 in property taxes and motel room taxes owed by SIST or its subsidiaries that would need to be paid before licenses are issued.
According to state statutes, the first installment on property taxes must be made by Jan. 31 or the entire amount becomes delinquent.
Two businesses - the Hunan Chinese Restaurant, 145 S. Main St., which leases from SIST, and the El Mariachi Cantina and Grill, 635 S. Main St., which leases from SIST subsidiary Midwest Properties - were issued new licenses after paying the property tax on behalf of their landlords.
Family Dollar is arranging to pay the overdue taxes on the property it leases from Midwest Properties at 229 E. Green Bay St., according to the city.
