The father of Church of Scientology leader David Miscavige has reportedly signed a deal to write a book about his son's life. But the working title, If He Dies, He Dies, suggests the story may not be a flattering one.
The words refer to an account given by another father and son, Dwayne and Daniel Powell, who told police in 2013 they were hired to conduct close surveillance of Miscavige's father, Ron Miscavige Sr.
The elder Miscavige had left the Scientology staff in 2012 and was living in Wisconsin.
In separate interviews with police in West Allis, Wis., the Powells said they worked at the behest of David Miscavige and once saw his father, in his late 70s, grasp his chest and slump over while loading his car. Fearing it was a heart attack, the Powells called an intermediary for instructions and got a return call, they said, from David Miscavige. They said he told them to stay back.
Daniel Powell quoted David Miscavige as saying, "If he dies, he dies. Don't intervene."
Details about Ron Miscavige's book deal surfaced Tuesday in a newsletter by Publishers Marketplace, which monitors such transactions.
The church's media relations office said in an email that David Miscavige "has always taken care of his father and continues to do so," and it "knows nothing beyond media reports about any purported book."
The church also disputes the Powells' story, saying David Miscavige never directed any investigation by Dwayne Powell. "No such conversation with Mr. Miscavige ever took place," it stated, "and any claim that one did is provable bull- - - -."
