Jim Carrey’s ex-girlfriend Cathriona White had reportedly become involved in the Church of Scientology after moving to America and had been taking classes at the cult’s Hollywood Celebrity Centre at the time of her death.
The beautician was found dead by LAPD officers on Monday night at 8.40pm at her home in Los Angeles after two of her friends went to visit her and are said to have discovered her body.
According to reports, the 30-year-old had been struggling in Hollywood after leaving home in 2009 and missed her family.
The brunette had been taking acting classes as soon as she moved to America as well as working as a make-up artist on a number of TV shows.
Following her suspected suicide, Tony Ortega, who writes a regular Scientology blog, has claimed two of her friends said she had been taking classes at the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre in Los Angeles.
Tony alleges she had been working on her “objectives” while taking the Survival Rundown, where members have to undertake a variety of tasks while being quizzed by another member, at the time of her death.
He also alleges that she was first introduced to the religion by friends of singer Beck, who is a well-known Scientologist.
Writing on his blog, he claims: “Her friends tell us Cathriona got involved in Scientology four to five years ago through members of Beck’s circle of friends."
“They encouraged her to move to the US from Ireland and take Scientology courses.”
He also claims her friends were worried when she began dating Carrey - who is said to have known she was a Scientologist and who had mocked the religion on a number of occasions - again six months ago.
He continues: "Cathriona’s friends say that they were concerned about Cat dating Carrey again.
"But they were assured by Scientologists they knew that Cat was emotionally prepared for the challenge of dating Carrey because, they said, 'She had just finished the Purif and was doing her objectives.
"That basically means they think she can handle anything, that’s the way Scientologists think."
It comes as it emerged there were pills found next to her body at the time of her death and also a suicide note that mentions the actor, Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said.
An autopsy is yet to be conducted.
Meanwhile, family friends of Cathriona have said her home town of Cappawhite in Ireland’s County Tipperary is "in shock".
Fine Gael councillor Mary Hanna, Hourigan who is a friend of the White family, also paid a glowing tribute to Cathriona.
Mary said: “Cathriona was a stunning looking girl, very quiet, very reserved, and very gentle, as are all the White family. She was very bright girl going to school.
“Everybody would remember her. Obviously we are in shock that she is not with us any longer.
“The people in Cappawhite are deeply shocked. It’s hard to believe that poor child is gone, whatever happened. The facts remain that a mother is without her daughter this evening.
“Her sister Lisa and her brother James are without a sister, her grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins are all without Cathriona. It’s so heartbreaking. Nobody saw this coming.
“The community is in mourning and in great shock since the news hit. The community will be rallying around the family now,” she added.
Cathriona was found dead just days after she split from the Hollywood actor.
A statement released from Cathriona’s family read: “The family of Cathriona White sincerely regret the untimely passing of their beloved daughter and sister.
“Cathriona was a shining light in our lives who was loved deeply by her entire family.
“We will miss her terribly and at this difficult time we ask to be left in private to mourn our loss.”
Carrey, 53, and Cathriona had dated for a while in 2012 and were pictured hand in hand in New York earlier this year.
The last two photos posted on Carrey’s Twitter account were credited to Ms White.
She last posted on the “@littleirishcat” social networking page on Thursday, saying: “Signing off Twitter, I hope I have been a light to my nearest and dearest.”
In Carrey’s statement, he said Ms White was a “kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil”.
He added: “My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her.
“We have all been hit with a lightning bolt.”
