Tom Cruise, John Travolta, Kirstie Alley, Elisabeth Moss, Michael Pena, Erika Christensen, Juliette Lewis and Jenna Elfman have one thing in common: They’re all Scientologists.
Celebrities like Cruise and Travolta are synonymous with the pseudo-religion, while the others may (or may not) be surprising.
Nevertheless, there are other stars who no longer bow to the Church of Sci, and they’re the ones getting the spotlight here.
Laura Prepon is the latest to publicly renounce the religion.
The news came out last week in a new interview but she said she hasn’t practised Scientology in nearly five years. Hmm, that’s around the same time the Orange is the New Black star split from longtime boyfriend (and longtime Scientologist) Christopher Masterson, and found love with now-husband Ben Foster.
Leah Remini was in the Church of Scientology for three decades before she left in 2013. She infamously turned that departure into arguably the biggest hit of her career – the docuseries Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath, in which she featured former members exposing the church’s inner workings.
Lisa Marie Presley was brought into the church as a child by her mother, Priscilla Presley. But she left in 2014, explaining at the time that she was “slowly starting to self-destruct” and “they were taking my soul, my money, my everything.”
Funnily enough, Priscilla left the church a few years later, joining her daughter in the free world.
Jeffrey Tambor spent two years studying with the church, where he “felt that love” and was counting on it to “fix” him, he told the Hollywood Reporter in 2017.
It wasn’t the exorbitant cost that caused him to abruptly leave but, rather, the pressure they were applying on him to split from his second wife.
Unlike the years and decades many celebs had with the religion, Tiffany Haddish lasted a day. She signed what she recalls was a “billion-year contract” because she was homeless and “needed a place to stay” but when she saw the bunk beds, she threw a fit, and they tore up said contract and kicked her out.
Chicago P.D. star Jason Beghe didn’t hold back after he left the church he called home for 14 years, telling Fox News the religion was “destructive,” “a rip-off,” and “very, very dangerous for your spiritual, psychological, mental, emotional health and evolution.”
He added at the time that he didn’t have an agenda when bashing the religion, explaining that he was lucky enough to have gotten out. “If Scientology is real, then something’s f***ed up.”
Basically, everyone romantically involved with Cruise got the hell out of there.
wo of Cruise’s ex-wives, Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes, left that part of their lives behind when they divorced the actor. Cruise and Kidman’s children, Connor and Isabella Cruise, are still in deep and neither reportedly speak to their mother.
