Brian Leonard Golightly Marshall, who refers to himself as BLGM, claims to have confirmation from a former pope that his face is burnt into the famous Turin Shroud and he is 'Jesus of Nazareth' reincarnated.
The wild claims - coupled with homophobic rants about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (LGBT) "being destroyed" and allegations the current Pope Francis is his nemesis - have sparked concerns as his number of followers grows.
Marshall lives in the small coastal town of Toogoom, 180 miles north of Brisbane, in Queensland, Australia, with his wife, pet cat, plants and a car he calls the 'Ark of the Covenant'.
He has published online a letter he claims is from former Pope Benedict as well as images of his face transposed on the Turin shroud.
The 71-year-old has also shared several videos online during which he claims to have scars on his hands and feet "where he was nailed to the cross".
In one online posting, he is pictured above the description: "The Christ Comforter Father King of Kings of Lords Brian Leonard Golightly Marshall."
Underneath it states: "Almighty God BLGM is taking back his rainbow. The LGBT will be destroyed as they were at Sodom and Gomorrah in their day."
People from as far away as the US have been convinced by Marshall's videos to join him in Toogoom.
These include one man, who his family will not identify, said to have left his wife, children and grandchildren in north California, to live with the cult.
"He told his wife that he's going to go to Australia to be with him. Leaving her and his kids and grandkids to go be with this guy."
The letter allegedly penned by Pope Benedict reads: "Many days ago Mr Brian Marshall sent me photographs of Him and the Most Holy Shroud of Turin.
"He actually looks so much like that of the Holy Image on the Shroud.
"There is no other explanation. He is simply the Lord Jesus Christ Almighty!
"He is the Most Royal Man Alive, The King of Kings. The Messiah, Almighty and Everlasting."
However many have criticised Marshall's claims.
One said: "It would be kind of amusing if he was perfectly sane, and was doing it sarcastically to see how many people would follow him!"
