Seagram’s liquor heiress Clare Bronfman has coughed up $6 million to the US government for her role in accused upstate sex cult Nxivm, according to new court documents.
Bronfman, who worked in the group’s “legal department” — despite not being a lawyer — was ordered to forfeit the sum after pleading guilty earlier this year to charges of conspiracy to conceal and harbor an illegal alien for financial gain, and fraudulent use of identification.
The 40-year-old actually made good on her debt in June, but the documents only became public Wednesday.
The booze scion bankrolled not only Nxivm leader Keith Raniere’s alleged self-help group, but also put some $14 million into a defense trust for her co-defendants, which included “Smallville” star Allison Mack.
Only Raniere took his case to trial. He was swiftly convicted by a jury following testimony from multiple women that they were tricked into joining a secret society within Nxivm where they were starved, branded with Raniere’s initials and ordered to have sex with him.
Bronfman faces up to 25 years imprisonment at sentencing, though her original sentencing date of July 25 was indefinitely postponed.
