Heiress to the Seagram’s booze empire Clare Bronfman was so devoted to sex cult Svengali Keith Raniere she spent a fortune trying to silence critics, New York prosecutors say.
And they want the 40-year-old heirhead jailed for five years for her role.
“When I was at my most vulnerable, Clare Bronfman traumatized me,” one survivor wrote in a victim impact statement.
Using an army of lawyers, daddy’s millions and private eyes, Bronfman was “obsessive” to probe and intimidate anyone who spoke out against the sex cult or Raniere.
She is slated to be sentenced on Sept. 30 but prosecutors want the high-ranking cult member who was part of Raniere’s inner circle to serve double the time.
It was Bronfman’s money that supported the organization and silenced its critics, prosecutors said.
She pleaded guilty last August to conspiracy to conceal and harbour illegal aliens for financial gain and fraudulent use of identification.
“Bronfman spent millions of dollars of her inherited fortune on Raniere’s endeavours,” prosecutors wrote, according to the New York Post.
“She pursued Raniere’s accusers and critics by dispatching powerful teams of lawyers, private investigators, and public relations firms to attempt to discredit them and dredge up information that could be used to undermine their claims.”
In July 2017, prosecutors claim the booze heiress received five emails from victims asking that their “collateral” be destroyed or returned to them.
The collateral refers to blackmail material that included their darkest secrets and nude photos.
The women were members of the inner sex circle called DOS that was overseen by Raniere second banana and former Smallville star Allison Mack. Slaves had Raniere and Mack’s initials branded into their pubic area.
Bronfman claimed ignorance about DOS, didn’t respond and told cops in New York and Vancouver she wanted one of the women charged..
“[Bronfman and Raniere] drafted threatening letters which were then sent, verbatim, to DOS victims by attorneys in Mexico that Bronfman had retained,” according to the court document.
“The only reason for Bronfman and Raniere to send these letters to sex trafficking victims was to attempt to threaten and intimidate them, efforts which succeeded.”
One victim said: “Receiving these letters shook me to my core … It had been more than a year since I left DOS and NXIVM, and I felt violated once again, wondering if they would ever just let me go and allow me to move on with my life.
“If Clare never had anything to do with DOS, and if DOS had nothing to do with NXIVM, why did she deploy such an underhanded intimidation tactic to scare me into remaining silent?”
In addition, she recruited immigrants into DOS promising the world but ultimately the prize was sex abuse and humiliation.
Prosecutors said she showed “an astonishing lack of empathy for the financial struggles of others.”
She reportedly remains loyal to Raniere and has paid his legal bills.
“I don’t think her view of me has changed at all. If anything it’s gotten stronger,” Ranierre told a follower during a jailhouse conversation in 2019.
Raniere, 60, was found guilty as charged on seven counts, including racketeering and sex trafficking. He is slated to be sentenced on Oct. 27.
Prosecutors want him locked up for life
